Headteacher's Weekly Review

Dear Parents/Carers,

Once again the week began with a curriculum information evening, this time for parents of our new Year 7 students.  We were very pleased to welcome so many parents to the Year 7 Curriculum Evening on Monday; there was a real buzz of excitement about what the students’ first year at Woking High School will bring and it was great to hear so much positive feedback about how students are already feeling part of the Woking High School fabric. After having shared some key messages about the curriculum and support on offer, staff stayed behind to answer more student specific questions. If you were unable to attend or couldn’t stay behind to ask a question, please do not hesitate to contact us with any queries you might have. Please be aware that the presentation is now on the website.

On Tuesday afternoon, Year 9, 10 and 11 students were fortunate to experience a vibrant and very diverse careers fair.  Exhibitors included The Bank of England, Surrey Sports Park, Surrey Satellite Technology, and the NHS and TI Media. The fair was also attended by our local 6th form colleges, a selection of universities and a number of apprenticeship organisations. Students were engaging and enthusiastic.

Later that evening, the Friends of Woking High School met for their AGM and Autumn meeting.  There was a very good turnout and very positive news to report about the fundraising for our minibus.  The current total stands at £6k.  Our particular thanks go to Horsell After School Club for their very generous donation. Thanks also to all those who shopped at Waitrose in July and everyone who is collecting plastic bottle tops, used pens and triggers for recycling.  Please keep up the fundraising drive.  At the meeting, the FoWHS also made donations to Art, PE, Computing, Drama, Science, MFL, Site team and Geography, for items that will enhance student learning experiences.  Finally, thanks also go to the Brogden family, the Singharays and the Shanklas, all of whom have recently given donations to support work in Art, Music, Drama and Science.  We are most grateful.

12 girls from Years 8 and 9 were invited to participate in a rugby tournament at The Stoop, Twickenham on Wednesday.  This was courtesy of our links with Harlequins RFU.  Next week, our rugby Masterclass begins (Wednesday 26th September 8-9 a.m.) and our participation in Project Rugby continues for a second year – this time with a focus on Year 8 girls.

Please read the following notice from the MFL department:
The MFL Department is looking for volunteers to help our French, German and Spanish GCSE students prepare for their Speaking and Writing GCSEs during school hours (between 9.20am and 3.30pm). If you are able to offer any help, please contact Mr Bolis, Head of MFL, at the following address: pbolis@wokinghigh.surrey.sch.uk.

News of another Woking High School alumni was received at the weekend.  Emma Atkins was awarded a 2.1 in Music from Southampton University.  She has also released a debut album which can be listened to on https://open.spotify.com/album/5qvY3wDTsP7OMDPGDy1ivD?si=rVcrDbpvTUStScr8pxkJxA
We send her our congratulations.

Congratulations also go to the following students for their achievement in music exams.

Edward Steel – Year 10 – Grade 4 Pianoforte – Merit

Finally, please see flyer about a free event, Woking Fun Day, taking place at Woking Park this Saturday.
