Headteacher's Weekly Review

Dear Parents/Carers,

We extend a warm welcome to the 12 Spanish students who are visiting us and sampling the English education system.  They have integrated well, not least as their uniforms are very similar to ours!   Our Year 9 and 10 students have been excellent hosts and Woking High School students studying Spanish have benefited from lots of extra speaking practice.

Our final Curriculum Evening for Years 8 and 9 was very well-attended and it was great to have the opportunity to speak to parents about the curriculum and pastoral support in place for the year. If you were unable to attend, the presentation is now on the website. Just a reminder that we will have an Options Evening for Year 9 parents on Monday 4th February 2019 at 6 p.m., where we will provide further information about the Options process. If you were unable to attend, a copy of the powerpoint slides is on the website http://www.wokinghigh.surrey.sch.uk/Information-Events

Please may I draw your attention to a number of safeguarding issues.

•        As I am sure you are aware, there have been a number of recent safeguarding issues affecting the local area. A police statement was issued on Wednesday with regards to criminal activity in and around Woking Town centre. Our safeguarding leads at the school are always kept informed of any relevant safety matters by the Surrey Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub team and the Surrey Safeguarding Children’s Board and agree on pertinent actions together when any concerns arise.

Woking High School did have Surrey Police in to deliver an assembly on knife crime recently and this was booked at the start of the year and is part of our ongoing PSHE programme for students at the school. Our PSHE curriculum educates students on the many aspects of keeping themselves safe, including sessions led by the Growing Against Violence charity on understanding the dangers of gang culture, social media and violent and graphic music. We have a close working relationship with the Police and have been made fully aware of the national initiative, Operation Sceptre and any pertinent local safety issues. If any of our students are ever affected in any way, an agreed package of support is put in place for them and monitored by our Designated Safeguarding Lead team.
•        In addition to this we have our local Police liaison officer in school for a whole day twice every half term; this was also something that was in place during the last academic year. The primary aim of this initiative is to make the Police more visible to students and staff and improve positive engagement with the Police service.
•        The advice we always give to our students is the same as that included in the release by Surrey Police earlier today in that they should take care when they are out and about by staying vigilant and always being aware of their surroundings, to not advertise their valuables and to always try to stay with their friends if possible.
•        Our school gates are on a timed entry system.  The front gates (Morton Road) are open from 7.00-8.55 a.m. and are then opened on demand during the school day, operated from our main office.  The back gates (Horsell Rise) close at 8.55 a.m. so students need to ensure that they are in school before that time if they are accessing the school site from Horsell Rise.
•        The school site is open from 8 a.m.–4.30 p.m. for students, unless they are competing in school events which start at an earlier time or which finish later than 4.30 p.m.

Today we joined with many other organizations across the country that held a Macmillan Coffee Morning. As well as a wonderful array of edible goodies, money was raised from a tombola and loose change jars.  So far we have collected £320 for this fantastic cause.

I attach a copy of a letter giving you information about a nationwide event involving Headteachers from across the country.  As I am sure you are aware, schools are facing very difficult financial circumstances and, whilst understanding the fiscal pressures on government, Headteachers feel that the proposed National Funding Formula for schools is not adequately funded.  As a result, under the banner of the “Worth Less?” campaign, Headteachers, including those from Surrey, are endeavouring to make their voices heard and have presented a petition to the Chancellor asking for proper investment for our schools.

Advanced notice of two events happening next week.  Firstly, following the delightful production of ‘The Sound of Music’ last year, PIE Productions’ second project is well underway. It was announced this week that the 2019 school production will be ‘Grease: School Edition’ by special arrangement with Theatrical Rights Worldwide. ‘Grease: School Edition’ features the book, music and lyrics by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, featuring additional songs by arrangement with Robert Stigwood. Auditions will be taking place on Monday 1st October in the Main Hall from 3.30-5.30 p.m. The audition is open to students from all year groups, and students may find details of what they need to prepare on the student shared drive in the PIE Productions folder. The auditions are really good fun, and designed to alleviate any nerves that the students may feel; consequently, students will be participating in group performances and sing-alongs. In addition, students need to ensure that as the evenings are getting darker, they have methods of getting home. The final production is due to be performed over three days (12th-14th February 2019). The whole school has been buzzing with excitement this week at the announcement; we suspect that the students will make the casting process very difficult, but we are very much looking forward to seeing the abundance of talent that Woking High School students have to offer.

Secondly, a reminder that school will close for students at 12 noon on Tuesday 2nd October in order for staff to prepare for our annual Open Evening, which takes place from 5.30-8.30 p.m. that evening.

Best wishes,

Headteacher's Weekly Review

Dear Parents/Carers,

Once again the week began with a curriculum information evening, this time for parents of our new Year 7 students.  We were very pleased to welcome so many parents to the Year 7 Curriculum Evening on Monday; there was a real buzz of excitement about what the students’ first year at Woking High School will bring and it was great to hear so much positive feedback about how students are already feeling part of the Woking High School fabric. After having shared some key messages about the curriculum and support on offer, staff stayed behind to answer more student specific questions. If you were unable to attend or couldn’t stay behind to ask a question, please do not hesitate to contact us with any queries you might have. Please be aware that the presentation is now on the website.

On Tuesday afternoon, Year 9, 10 and 11 students were fortunate to experience a vibrant and very diverse careers fair.  Exhibitors included The Bank of England, Surrey Sports Park, Surrey Satellite Technology, and the NHS and TI Media. The fair was also attended by our local 6th form colleges, a selection of universities and a number of apprenticeship organisations. Students were engaging and enthusiastic.

Later that evening, the Friends of Woking High School met for their AGM and Autumn meeting.  There was a very good turnout and very positive news to report about the fundraising for our minibus.  The current total stands at £6k.  Our particular thanks go to Horsell After School Club for their very generous donation. Thanks also to all those who shopped at Waitrose in July and everyone who is collecting plastic bottle tops, used pens and triggers for recycling.  Please keep up the fundraising drive.  At the meeting, the FoWHS also made donations to Art, PE, Computing, Drama, Science, MFL, Site team and Geography, for items that will enhance student learning experiences.  Finally, thanks also go to the Brogden family, the Singharays and the Shanklas, all of whom have recently given donations to support work in Art, Music, Drama and Science.  We are most grateful.

12 girls from Years 8 and 9 were invited to participate in a rugby tournament at The Stoop, Twickenham on Wednesday.  This was courtesy of our links with Harlequins RFU.  Next week, our rugby Masterclass begins (Wednesday 26th September 8-9 a.m.) and our participation in Project Rugby continues for a second year – this time with a focus on Year 8 girls.

Please read the following notice from the MFL department:
The MFL Department is looking for volunteers to help our French, German and Spanish GCSE students prepare for their Speaking and Writing GCSEs during school hours (between 9.20am and 3.30pm). If you are able to offer any help, please contact Mr Bolis, Head of MFL, at the following address: pbolis@wokinghigh.surrey.sch.uk.

News of another Woking High School alumni was received at the weekend.  Emma Atkins was awarded a 2.1 in Music from Southampton University.  She has also released a debut album which can be listened to on https://open.spotify.com/album/5qvY3wDTsP7OMDPGDy1ivD?si=rVcrDbpvTUStScr8pxkJxA
We send her our congratulations.

Congratulations also go to the following students for their achievement in music exams.
Sam Griffiths Year 11 – Grade 5 Alto Saxophone – Pass
Edward Steel – Year 10 – Grade 4 Pianoforte – Merit

Finally, please see flyer about a free event, Woking Fun Day, taking place at Woking Park this Saturday.

Headteacher's Weekly Review

Dear Parents/Carers,

By now I hope that you will have received our Autumn 2018 Welcome letter (it was sent via Schoolcomms on Wednesday).  It contains key information and administrative guidance for the year ahead.

It was a pleasure to welcome so many Year 10 parents to the KS4 Curriculum information evening on Monday. The evening was focused on sharing key subject information and highlighting the support that is available to students throughout the next couple of years, such as the excellent careers advice provided by Innervate and the wrap-around care of the pastoral team.  If you were unable to attend, the powerpoint presentation given on the evening is on our website.  A reminder that the Year 7 Curriculum information evening is to be held on Monday 17th September in the School Hall at 6 p.m.  Invitations for this evening were sent out earlier this week.

At the end of last term, many of our students and a few staff members, were involved in the production of a short video (3+ minutes) highlighting key aspects of the school and focussing  on: academic excellence, outstanding pastoral care and unparalleled extra-curricular opportunities.  The staff and students have had a preview of the finished video this week and I am pleased to be able to share this with you.  It is located under the “The Spirit of Woking High School” with a link from the home page or in the ‘About Us’ section our website.  I hope you agree that it really does capture the ethos of Woking High School.

This week saw the launch of Ukie-Digital Schoolhouse Hub at Woking High School, Computing Department, with Mr Afana as the Hub leader. The Hub is an outreach project that is aimed towards primary schools, to provide advice and training for teachers and students in the delivery of Computer Science and Computational Thinking topics and skills. UbiSoft, an international Computer and video Games company, as new sponsors of Ukie-Digital Schoolhouse, has announced their sponsorship of Woking High School, represented by the Computing Department. This sponsorship will open new opportunities for our students in many areas, including Business Studies, Design and Technology, access to real life work experience, public relationships and many more.  As a result of this new opportunity, the school will be hosting the first E-Sport event for secondary schools students during this academic year. This is part of a national competition that takes place on an annual basis.

An invitation to the AGM and first meeting of the Friends of Woking High School for this academic year, was sent out at the end of the summer term, in accordance with the constitution of FoWHS.  The invitation is also currently on our website.  All parents/carers of students at Woking High School are most welcome to attend both the AGM and Autumn meeting, which occurs on Tuesday 18th September at 7 p.m. in the School Library.

Please see attached details regarding the Woking Rotary Swimathon on Sunday 14th October, for which the Friends of Woking High School have been selected as one of the five charities that will receive the monies raised from it.

Also a big thank you from the Friends of Woking High School to the Horsell Village After School Club for their very generous donation of £5,000 towards our school mini bus appeal.  The HVASC committee felt the mini bus would be a great place to donate some of their reserves, as many of the After School Club children go on to Woking High School.  We are extremely pleased and grateful. This large donation has helped us make a big step towards our £10,000 target - see link for progress. https://www.totalgiving.co.uk/appeal/schoolbus

Congratulations go to the following students for their achievements in Music exams over the summer.

Year 7 - Daniel Grainger – Grade 3 Saxophone – Merit
Year 7 - Herbie Hunter – Grade 4 Classical guitar – Merit
Year 8 - Meghan Amin – Grade 5 Flute – Merit
Year 11 - Emily Loxton – Grade 5 Theory – Distinction

Congratulations also go to two ex-Woking High School students, Lucy Colleer graduated with a 2.1 degree in MSci Psychology from the University of Nottingham in 2017 and is now working for NHS NW London Clinical Commissioning group promoting organ donation.  Lauren Hebditch, our Young Achievers guest speaker in 2017, has passed Bar School and was Called to The Bar of England and Wales on 26th July 2018.  Please see a picture of Lauren in her wig and gown.

Our good luck wishes go to Rhys Conlon in Year 7 who is competing in the British Lead Climbing Championships in Edinburgh the first weekend in October.
Best wishes,

Headteacher's Weekly Review

Dear Parents/Carers,

A very warm welcome back to the new academic year.  I do hope that you all enjoyed the lovely, sunny summer holiday.

During the summer a number of improvements were made to the school infrastructure, including the upgrading of computer rooms, the completion of air conditioning in the main block and the installation of a more environmentally friendly boiler.  I am grateful to the Site team, IT team and Finance team for all their hard work, as it means that the school community have returned to a lovely learning environment for the new term.

Of course the highlight of the summer was the publication of the GCSE results on 23rd August. I am delighted to report that the Year 11 cohort of 2018 achieved the best results in the school’s history.

You will no doubt have read in the media that this year almost all GCSEs were awarded 9-1 with 9 being the highest. Students and schools are measured in terms of the progress made during secondary school (P8) and the outcome of their best 8 grades with English and Maths double counted (A8). Additionally, they are also judged on the percentage of students who gain the “Basic” measure, i.e. at least a Grade 4 in English and Maths.  We will not know the P8 score until later this month as it is nationally calculated.  Our A8 score is 56 – the equivalent of a Grade 6 in all subjects.

35% of all entries gained 9-7/A*-A grades
90% gained 4+ in English Literature/Language
83% gained 4+ in Maths
82% achieved 4+ in both English and Maths
60% achieved 5+ in both English and Maths.

Our congratulations go to all students on their excellent achievements.  We are very proud of both their attainment and progress.

We have had a very successful start to the beginning of the new academic year with two very focused staff training days on 4th and 5th September.  We welcomed our new Year 7 students to Woking High School on 6th September and welcomed back those in Years 8, 9, 10 and 11.  We also welcomed new staff to the school and I am delighted to say that we have a full complement of excellently qualified subject specialists in all subjects.

Once again, we are looking forward to an exciting, successful and enjoyable Autumn Term.

A reminder to all parents of Year 10 students that the KS4 Curriculum evening is to be held on Monday 10th September at 6 p.m. in the School Hall.  Information about this evening was sent at the beginning of this term.  Curriculum evenings will also be held for Year 7s (17th September) and Year 8 and 9s (24th September).  Letters will be sent shortly with further details.  I will also send a more detailed Welcome Letter next week, which will include up-to-date staff lists, uniform lists and details about specific school policies and practices.

Best wishes,

Jane Abbott
